Fevers and Hell-Fire

Muhammad believed that fevers were caused by hell-fire:

Narrated Abu Jamra Ad-Dabi:

I used to sit with Ibn ‘Abbas in Mecca. Once I had a fever and he said (to me), “Cool your fever with Zam-zam water, for Allah’s Apostle said: ‘It, (the Fever) is from the heat of the (Hell) Fire; so, cool it with water (or Zam-zam water).’”

           -Sahih Bukhari 4.483, see also 4.484, 4.485, 4.486

However, we now know from modern medical knowledge that fevers are part of the body’s immune defense against harmful pathogens.

The Number of Intestines

While eating, Muhammad made a biological statement about the human body:

Ibn ‘Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying that a non-Muslim eats in seven intestines whereas a Muslim eats in one intestine.

-Sahih Muslim 3.5113, see also 3.5114-5120

The belief that different humans eat in a different number of intestines is biologically false.

Don’t Look Up!

Muhammad taught that one should not lift up their head during prayer because they might have their eyes snatched out:

            Jabir b. Samura reported

The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: The people who lift their eyes towards the sky in Prayer should avoid it or they would lose their eyesight.

            -Sahih Muslim 4.0862

Abu Huraira reported:

People should avoid lifting their eyes towards the sky while supplicating in prayer, otherwise their eyes would be snatched away.

            -Sahih Muslim 4.0863

I’m quite sure that some Muslims have lifted up their eyes in prayer, and obviously, nothing happened.  Otherwise, we would have heard about it.

Flies in the Drink

Muhammad had some advice for people when flies flew into their drink:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said “If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease.”

           -Sahih Bukhari 4.537

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “If a fly falls in the vessel of any of you, let him dip all of it (into the vessel) and then throw it away, for in one of its wings there is a disease and in the other there is healing (antidote for it) i.e. the treatment for that disease.”

            -Sahih Bukhari 7.673

The belief that one wing of a fly has a disease and the other wing has an antidote is biologically false.  First, both wings share the same circulatory system, and so, both would have the disease and antidote, not one or the other.  Second, it is possible (if not probable) for a fly to only have a disease while not having an antidote.

Convenient Revelations

As recorded in the Koran and the Hadiths, Muhammad would have “convenient” revelations that would make con-artist televangelists jealous!

Stealing Wives

One day, after seeing his adopted son’s wife, Zainab, Muhammad exclaimed how beautiful she was.  After hearing about this incident, Zaid, his adopted son, offered to divorce Zainab so that Muhammad could marry her.  Eventually, Muhammad agreed to the plan, and so, he married Zainab, his adopted son’s ex-wife. This caused a great disturbance in the community because it was completely immoral.  Then, Muhammad suddenly (and quite conveniently) had a revelation from Allah which is recorded in the Koran:

“So when Zaid had accomplished what he would of her, then We gave her in marriage to you, so that there should not be any fault in the believers, touching the wives of their adopted sons, when they have accomplished what they would of them; and Allah’s commandment must be performed.  There is no fault in the prophet, touching what Allah had ordained for him.”

            -Sura 33:37-38 (Arberry)

Muhammad, just when he needed it, got a revelation from God that he (and he alone) should be able to marry his adopted son’s wife!  This revelation was supposedly written down on a stone tablet in heaven from eternity past!

Stealing Daughters

When Muhammad was 53 years old, he conveniently received a revelation from Allah that told him that he should marry Abu Bakr’s daughter, Aisha (!):

            “Narrated ‘Aisha:

Allah’s Apostle said to me, “You were shown to me twice (in a dream) before I married you.  I saw an angel carrying you in a silken piece of cloth, and I said to him, ‘Uncover (her),’ and behold, it was you.  I said (to myself), ‘If this is from Allah, then it must happen.’ Then you were shown to me, the angel carrying you in a silken piece of cloth, and I said (to him), ‘Uncover (her), and behold, it was you.  I said (to myself), ‘If this is from Allah, then it must happen.’”

           -Sahih Bukhari 9.140

Not surprisingly, Abu Bakr was shocked:

           “Narrated ‘Ursa:

The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for ‘Aisha’s hand in marriage.  Abu Bakr said, “But I am your brother.”  The Prophet said, “You are my brother in Allah’s religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry.”

           -Sahih Bukhari 7.18

After his first wife’s death, Muhammad married between 9 and 11 wives in just ten years!  Interestingly, Aisha supposedly told Muhammad, “I see your Allah quickly grants you your desire.”  NO KIDDING!

Allah Says, “Stop Bickering!”

When his wives would start fighting with each other, Muhammad would get a revelation from Allah to tell them to stop bickering. This is recorded in the Koran, a book that was supposedly written down in heaven from eternity (Sura 33:36-38)!  Doesn’t God have better things to do in His eternal Word for mankind than to solve petty disputes between wives?!

Muhammad’s Visiting Hours

In the Koran, the book that was supposedly written in heaven from eternity past, Allah tells when Muhammad’s followers are and are not supposed to visit Muhammad and how long they are to talk with him (!):

“O believers, enter not the house of the Prophet, except leave (permission) is given you for a meal without watching for its hour.  But when you are invited, then enter. And when you have had the meal, disperse, neither lingering for idle talk; that is hurtful to the Prophet and he is ashamed before you.”

            -Sura 33:53, also see 29:62-63, 49:1-5

Doesn’t God have better things to say in His Eternal Word than to talk about this?!

The Doctrine of Abrogation

In the Koran, many verses and commands (which were supposedly the eternal thoughts of Allah) were abrogated (i.e. nullified). Although this is the truth, the Koran says that the verses were not abrogated but substituted (i.e. word play for a synonym):

“None of our revelations do we abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but we substitute something better or similar.”

           -Sura 2:106

When Muhammad was in Mecca, he would preach that there should “be no compulsion in religion” (i.e. no one should be forced into a religion; Sura 2:256).  However, when Muhammad went to Medina, he gained much power and started to exercise it violently.  When some of his followers started falling away (i.e. apostasy), he conveniently received “revelation” from Allah (Sura 4:89) that apostates should be killed (i.e. silenced).  To this day, in countries where Sharia (i.e. Islamic law) is practiced, those who leave Islam incur the death-penalty.

Another example would be that when Muhammad was in Mecca, he said that war should only be waged in self-defense (Sura 15:94). However, while in Medina, that verse was abrogated, and Muhammad conveniently received another “revelation” from Allah telling Muhammad to raid caravans and attack unbelievers (Sura 8:65).  [More on the doctrine of abrogation is discussed in the article on Islam as a religion.]

Unless stated otherwise, all Koran quotes are from Pickthall’s translation.
